Git is not easy. Picking the right Git workflow for a collaborative open source project is even harder. I have tried many, and always found limitations that turned the repo into a bazaar. I like this one, it is complex but complete. The trick is to keep the hotfixes in their own branches and to always bump the release number when pushing to master.

"More than half of the internet’s top websites use a little known capability of Adobe’s Flash plug-in to track users and store information about them, but only four of them mention the so-called Flash Cookies in their privacy policies, UC Berkeley researchers reported Monday.

Unlike traditional browser cookies, Flash cookies are relatively unknown to web users, and they are not controlled through the cookie privacy controls in a browser. That means even if a user thinks they have cleared their computer of tracking objects, they most likely have not."

A must read if you are into node.js, or interested by scaling web services in general. Some very good points on the challenges of 'scaling in the large' and by large, we mean thousands of servers to power your gazillions of users.

The news is out, we informed today the onesocialweb community that both @alardw and myself will be leaving Vodafone in the near future. As announced a while ago, our research center in Maastricht is closing, and we did not manage to find an arrangement that would make it work for us. This is a very sad moment for me, I had invested a lot in this project and it was so exciting to contribute to the federated social web movement.

As with every life event, it can also be seen as an opportunity. For me, this is the chance to move away from a big co and finally embark in a true startup adventure. I can't say much at this stage, but it will be an exciting project, a great team, and a very hot topic: cloud computing. 

For now, I'll take a sabbatical for a few weeks, and focus on family, work in the (new) house, read books, and work on the next steps. Stay tuned for more details in the coming weeks and don't hesitate to get in touch if you want to discuss this more.
